San Francisco’s The Most Awesome Protagonist, led by singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Mikey O’Connor, has released a new album that is available for free from their website. Citing diverse influences such as Elliott Smith, Stevie Wonder and Daniel Johnston, Mikey has created “Drunken Children Tell The Ugliest Lies,” a 10 song indie-pop album unlike anything happening in new music. Performing all of the instruments himself in his San Francisco home, he says that most of the songs were written and recorded in under a week. “I had just gotten fired from my job and was broke and in a pretty bad spot so I just started hitting record and playing. Before I knew it I had the entire record finished.” The album is available for purchase with individual handmade covers but is also available in mp3 form completely for free at myspace.com/themostawesomeprotagonist. Seattle music website, Land Of Dads says "YOU KNOW THE MOST AWESOME PROTAGONIST? Maybe yeah, maybe no, but if no then yeah you wanna’, and if yeah then YEAH! What I’m basically trying to say here is Mikey, brilliantly flawed brains behind the pop project The Most Awesome Protagonist just dropped a new ten song album a couple of weeks ago, and since the kid lives like he just doesn’t give a f**k he decided to put it all online for download. Get it on your itunes and then get it stuck in your head for weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks. It’s ammo for the next mix tape war and it’s catchy like Hep C." The band's do-it-yourself ethic mixed with the talent of a born songwriter is what makes this artist special and someone to watch for in the future.
