New Shredder Offers E-Scrap Customers a Safe and Sound Method of Destruction

October 05, 2007 (PRLEAP.COM) Technology News
Madison, WI – October 5, 2007 – Cascade Asset Management (Cascade), a national leader in providing full service IT asset retirement solutions, is pleased to announce the implementation of a new shredder, the Vecoplan Retech Grinder RG42, into its operations to advance its shredding and separation processes. The purchase, made in conjunction with a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Demonstration Grant, will allow Cascade to increase recovery rates of usable commodities from e-scrap equipment.

“We have found a powerful shredding and separation technology to allow us to shred and mechanically separate hard to disassemble devices into recoverable material streams that will enhance our total recovery rates for all collected electronics,” says Neil Peters-Michaud, Cascade CEO and Co-founder. When used in combination with manual disassembly, the shredding and separation operation will demonstrate an innovative approach to domestic e-scrap processing that yields higher recovery rates.

Prior to the addition of the shredder, Cascade recovered 78% of all materials using traditional disassembly methods. With the addition of the new shredder, the company will increase that percentage to 89%. To put those figures in perspective, incorporating the new shredder into production operations will keep an additional 1.3 million pounds of mixed electronic waste out of the landfill per year, resulting in a total of nearly 14 million pounds. In comparison, most typical shredding operations can only convert about 50% of processed equipment into new raw materials, with the remainder landfilled or consumed as waste to energy.

Cascade will continue to collect a wide variety of electronic equipment from its customers, including monitors, computers, televisions, copiers, laptops, stereos, keyboards, and other office electronic devices. Cascade has more than 1,000 customers, and interfaces with other recycling and computer consolidators who collect from their own set of customers. The new shredding technology allows the company to satisfy the needs of these entities most efficiently and effectively.

“Using the shredder allows us to more rapidly address the increasing demand for responsible, domestic electronics recovery and recycling,” says Director of Operations James Windisch. “Cascade continues to demonstrate its leadership as a one-stop-shop for reusable and recyclable IT assets.”

Cascade offers a full spectrum of IT asset retirement services from hauling and logistics services to refurbishing and repair, demanufacturing of equipment for recycling, and secure media destruction. Disassembled commodities are sent to appropriate markets and processors for final treatment, with no hazardous waste being shipped to developing countries.
