The 1st annual Freshman Leadership Training Day kicked off Friday morning at the University School of Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with a personal development challenge from local keynote speaker, Alvin Day. “You are the one,” he told them individually as the event organized by the school’s Student Diversity Leadership Association began. “We want the students to have an identity as a class, as the class of 2011” Edwardo Johnson, a teacher at the school and advisor to the student run association, explained when asked about the objective of the day long event.
Mr. Day proceeded to show the freshman class how they can change the world by first changing themselves. “It was an incredible message,” said Dr. Poland, Director for the Upper School. “Exactly what they needed to set the tone for the day. Very inspiring.”
Alexandra Roland, one of the students responsible for coordinating the event and President of the Student Diversity Leadership Association, commented that the freshman class “responded well to Mr. Day’s presentation, especially when he allowed them to ask questions.” Christine Brown, another student holding a leadership role in the day’s events enjoyed Mr. Day’s “vivid account of his past,” and remarked that it “really connected with the students.”
