Searching for the essence of the deceased is not a Halloween game, instead it is an occupation and a book

For Bridgette Mongeon trying to bring to life the spirit of the deceased is not a Halloween special or a slumber party game, instead she spends every day of the year searching for the essence of deceased individuals; it is her occupation. She is a Houston, Texas, sculptor specializing in posthumous sculptures and is just completing a book about the subject titled, "Bringing to Life the Spirit of the Deceased-A Sculptor's Journey." http://www.creativesculpture.com/topics_memorial.html The book documents the commission of four posthumous sculptures and the artist's interaction with her clients, as well as the interaction with the deceased subject. It is an intimate look into the mind of the artist and the process of bringing the spirit and life into a sculpture.

"You develop a relationship with the deceased," was what one observer told her. It seemed impossible, but with the emotional attachment created over the very long process of sculpting a life-size bronze, she began to realize that is exactly what she does.

Is this a paranormal experience? "I think inspiration is indeed paranormal and by that definition, yes," states Mongeon. Some would claim her abilities as psychic, but Ms. Mongeon has gone to great lengths to find the science behind both the psychic and the emotion that is felt from the art. "Many of the unusual occurrences, combined with my inquisitive nature have propelled me to find the science. Without the explanation found in science, frankly some of the occurrences freaked me out," exclaims Mongeon. Does that mean that there are no unexplainable occurrences written in the book? Hardly, and she records many of these as well, and refers to them as 'her imaginings', or 'feather moments,' while continuing to search for the science behind them.

She claims the best part of creating posthumous sculpture is that she celebrates life through working with death and in doing so she offers the bereaved a way to have continuing bonds with the deceased. "Our western culture tends to push an individual to break the bonds between the living and the dead, and many people just cannot do that," states Mongeon. She is convinced that there is a connection between the living and the deceased. Bronze sculpture gives the loved ones a way to, not only honor the life of the deceased, but through the continuing bonds of bronze sculpture they are impressing the importance of that life on the world, and that gives them peace and helps them celebrate life.

The sculptor has always felt a need to memorialize, to bring to life the memory of a person who lived. "Wandering through the cemetery I see the names, and the dates—born… and died… and wonder is that all there is, who was this person? Having the opportunity to create for the cemetery, as in the case of Ellie, thrills me. Everyone who comes upon Ellie will get a sense of who she is." States the artist.
