Is Christian Dating Biblical

Gerald Njuguna, owner of http://www.JesusPenpals.com, a worldwide Christian social networking website, visited different popular Christian online forums to get the opinion of what Christians thought about dating and whether it was based on biblical principals. He got many interesting answers some of which were funny as they were varied."I believe the bible gives Christians the option to choose how to find a mate. It does not directly address how they should do it, so this implies that there is more than one acceptable way." said Chanis, a participant in the discussion. "As long a person does nothing that violates the scripture, I believe it is ok to date and totally ok not to date. Its up the Christian to use their God given brain power to figure out what is best for them." he added
"Dating is too fuzzy a word. We should parse it down "friendship dates" versus “romantic dates”. To engage in serious physical intimacy with a woman you know you'll never marry is a purely self-indulgent expression of sinful lust.” another person voiced his opinion. “Men can compartmentalize such things. For most women, however, physical intimacy only reinforces their emotions for you and makes the inevitable breakup more devastating. It is the willful victimization of your sister in Christ."
“I don’t think you could find a scripture to say it’s wrong, but I do think unless you’re planning to marry, it can become a chain of broken relationships, which seems to me, as I’ve heard it taught, practice for divorce. So I think maturity and tons of prayer for wisdom is best” another contributor chipped in.
The decision in choosing a marriage partner is usually taken very seriously by many people. But most couples get confused when asked to define the difference between dating and courtship.
GotQuestions.org, a non denominational site that answers many common Christian questions, defines dating as having fun and with someone and becoming intimate with them without having any real commitment. Courting on the other hand, gets to know someone enough to discover whether the two would be compatible for marriage by learning each other’s views on family, morals, goals, religious beliefs among other issues.
“I’m single and pray to God daily asking for His wisdom and guidance so that I make the right choice as I search for my future wife.” said Gerald, “I wouldn’t want to invest my time, effort, money and especially my emotions on someone who I will not end up marrying or even worse end up divorcing her.”
According to Americans for Divorce Reform, a site that has a compilation of world divorce statistics that state that Belarus has the highest percentage of divorce rate standing at a whooping 68% closely followed by the Russian Federation at 65%. The US stands at 49% divorce rate while the least is Macedonia at 5%.
“With such alarming figures it’s imperative that single Christians, whatever their opinions are on dating or courting, pray and seek godly counsel from church leaders or married Christian couples for accountability purposes so as not to step over the boundaries as we interact with the opposite sex.” Gerald said. “I believe this makes us more aware of what we are getting ourselves into should we decide to get marred so that the chances of divorce are reduced.”
