September 18, 2007 (PRLEAP.COM) Entertainment News
Folsom, Calif. — Sept. 18, 2007 — Silverado Systems, Inc. announced that it officially received two RED ONE™ Digital Cinema Camera systems from RED Digital Cinema Camera Company. Acting on an announcement made at National Association of Broadcasters 2006 that RED would be developing and shipping a 4k camera capable of digitally recording 35mm film-grade images, Silverado rapidly reserved cameras serial numbered 20 and 21. After a 16-month wait, RED shipped cameras #1-25 and Silverado CEO Torrey Loomis walked out the doors of RED headquarters with the world’s first commercially released 4k digital cinema cameras.“The wait was worth it,” explained Loomis who added “These cameras are going to enable an entire generation of up-and-coming filmmakers to economically translate their artistic vision to the silver screen at a level of quality not available before in a fully digital medium.”
“This is the camera I’ve been waiting for my whole career: jaw-dropping imagery recorded onboard a camera light enough to hold with one hand. …RED is going to change everything” recently remarked Academy Award winning director Steven Soderbergh - director and cinematographer of Ocean’s Eleven, Traffic and Solaris. Soderbergh is currently working with two pre-production RED ONE cameras in Spain shooting “Guerilla” about Argentine revolutionary Ernesto 'Che' Guevara’s travels to New York City in 1964 to address the United Nations.
At RED DAY in Lake Forest, CA, RED Founder Jim Jannard (also founder of the eye-wear and apparel company Oakley, Inc.) released the first 25 cameras and remarked “These cameras are not finished…they will never be finished. But when do we decide to let others on this ride with us? Today is that day…” Jannard’s comments reflect that, unlike traditional cinema or HD cameras, the RED ONE cameras have the capability to upgrade features using software updates, or by swapping out the camera’s hardware sensor for a new one—effectively creating a brand new camera that can be used by owners with pre-existing investments in lenses and accessories.
At the heart of RED ONE™ lives the 12-megapixel Mysterium™ CMOS sensor, Super 35mm sized, with unparalleled fidelity and flexibility. It combines low noise with superior charge capacity for dynamic range and color fidelity that allows users to finally have a “no excuse” digital imaging alternative to shooting 35mm film. The RED ONE™ camera is designed for flexibility and functionality. Weighing in at around 9 lbs, a streamlined package specifically designed to maximize shooting options. Matched with a 35mm PL lens mount it allows filmmakers to take advantage of the world’s best optics. Modular and upgradeable, the RED ONE™ camera is a future-proof acquisition system users can build upon. RED ONE™’s modular design means users can upgrade as RED adds new features, accessories and improve system specifications. RED ONE™ video can be edited in Apple’s Final Cut Studio film editing suite or Assimilate’s SCRATCH suite as well as RED’s REDAlert! or REDCine software.
Following a brief period of testing and training throughout September, Silverado will make RED ONE™ units #21 (Calvin) and #20 (Hobbes) immediately available to rent for film production starting October 1st. Multiple trainings and briefings are scheduled throughout Northern California throughout September and parties interested in the technology can contact Silverado to find a briefing near them.
