ProgressiveU, a nonpartisan social welfare organization that encourages an open discussion of current events, progressive values, and public policy priorities, announced that the Spring 2007 Blogging for Progress scholarship winners are Naomi Leger of El Paso, TX, Garrick Brown of Greensboro, NC, and Sherell Wiggins of Farmington, MI.

The Blogging for Progress scholarship was created to recognize those individuals who make an outstanding effort to open lines of communication and dialogue among high school and college students on issues of public policy, social welfare, and current events. ProgressiveU has awarded thousands of dollars toward higher education in the hopes of allowing students to realize their dreams of future leadership.

"Many students start blogging at ProgressiveU just for the chance to earn a scholarship, but they end up learning more than they ever imagined. They learn to respect others' opinions while persuasively expressing their own opinions, and they learn how to be leaders," said Art Morgan, President of ProgressiveU. "Every student who participates ends up winning in the long run, regardless of whether or not they walk away with a scholarship," said Morgan, adding that funding for the scholarships comes from both individual donations and advertising sponsorships from organizations with similar goals, such as The Junior Statesmen Foundation.

Naomi Leger attends the University of Phoenix Online and has been awarded the top $1,000 scholarship to continue her educational pursuits. Naomi is majoring in Human Services Management, and plans to continue her studies until she receives a Doctorate in History. Her ultimate goal is to continue sharing her love of history with students by teaching at the university level.

Garrick Brown attends North Carolina Central University and has been awarded one of two $500 scholarship awards to continue his education. Garrick is majoring in Meteorology, and has chosen Music as his minor. His career goals include becoming a meteorologist and eventually teaching music as a high school band director. Garrick would also love to establish a scholarship fund for aspiring college musicians.

Sherell Wiggins attends Michigan State University and has been awarded the final $500 scholarship. Sherell is majoring in Psychology and hopes to eventually receive an MBA, which she will put to use in the field of market research.

ProgressiveU aims to provide young people with the opportunity to discover, analyze, and discuss the values and democratic principles that promote a healthy and just society. ProgressiveU encourages students to think, speak up, and reach out through open discussion and debate of current events, progressive values, public policy priorities, community service and volunteerism.
