Emotion Control

New York, NY—-September 15, 2007—- Can science help you control your emotions? Positive Solutions of New York’s founder, Dr. Jennifer Brout-Lynn, thinks so. Dr. Brout-Lynn and Positive Solutions have provided a gift and are collaborating with Duke University’s Cognitive Behavioral Research and Treatment Program to announce the launch of the E.M.B. Brout Sensory Processing and Emotion Regulation Program.

The E.M.B. program will focus on the research and development of solutions to help people with sensory processing disorder and emotion regulation dysfunction regulate their emotions using personalized cues.

Dr. M. Zach Rosenthal, director of the Cognitive Behavioral Research and Treatment Program believes that personalized cues are the next step in emotion regulation. “Not everyone responds to common, every day stimuli in the same manner. For those suffering with sensory processing disorder, noises such as the taping of a pencil on a desk or the sound of someone chewing can cause the person to panic and send their body into a fight or flight mode. By assessing an individual’s specific emotional needs, we hope to develop customized signals so that people can regulate themselves. Ideally, in years to come, people with sensory issues will be able to control their responses to stimuli in the manner most comfortable to them.”

The immediate goal of the E.M.B. Program is to research specific populations that are adversely affected by sensory issues such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and borderline depression. By studying commonalities within each population and causes that elicit the panicked behavior, they would then seek to work on a more personalized treatment to create solutions for self-regulation. Ultimately, the program hopes to prove a connection between neurological and emotional functions in helping patients to self-regulate.

Dr. Jennifer Brout-Lynn, Founder of Positive Solutions of New York believes that progressive, evidenced-based research is the only hope for disorders like sensory processing that are under the radar. “I have every faith that the E.M.B. Program will have an active role in bringing awareness and solutions to sensory processing disorders. Our gift to the Cognitive Behavioral Research and Treatment Program is a testament to our faith in the program and our commitment to bringing about change.”

About the E.M.B. Brout Sensory Processing and Emotion Regulation Program
The E.M.B. Program seeks to advance the scientific understanding about why some people suffer from sudden, intense, and long-lasting spikes in emotional arousal in response to certain kinds of cues and in certain kinds of contexts. The Program also hopes to better identify who these people are and why they have these problems, and to develop and scientifically test new treatments. Many of these treatments will use portable technologies, such as cell phones, to provide tools that directly extend beyond the walls of the clinic or hospital, into any situation where help is needed to calm down before things get worse. This program is expected to introduce new solutions to old problems, and hopefully bring about positive change into the lives of a diversity of people, including, for example, kids and teens with sensory processing problems as well as adults with borderline personality disorder, PTSD, and other anxiety disorders.
