PC PRO, one of the UK’s most widely-read PC titles for professional IT users, has granted PrefixNE a four star rating in a review featured in its October 2007 issue. Examining the software in some detail, the magazine has issued a strongly positive verdict on the suite of software modules for network management, saying that it is ‘an effective inventory and asset management tool that could be just what your company needs’.

The article can be viewed on line at http://www.pcpro.co.uk:80/reviews/122270/prefixne-3.html, or on Prefix IT’s website www.prefixit.com.

Graeme Pitts-Drake, UK managing director of Prefix IT, says: “We’re delighted with this independent endorsement of the product from one of the UK’s most authoritative resources, PC PRO. The software has been designed, packaged and priced to address a range of compliance, asset and network management issues that all companies face.”

Examining the key components of the software architecture the review, the magazine has noted that software has a small network footprint, demanding little in the way of resources and that its impact on managed systems is therefore minimal.

PrefixNE includes four modules allowing users to manage and secure hardware and software assets in real time, deploy security patches, software upgrades and virus updates, manage and deploy software licenses, ensure compliance, track software usage, set IT policies, block applications such as P2P, protect data loss from external storage devices, prevent the spread of malicious code and strategically plan for the future based on powerful analysis and reporting.

Explaining the benefits of the management module, the review highlights the inclusion of essential network management services such as licence, hardware and software monitoring, system usage, assistance and reporting alongside other core support processes. Unusually, PrefixNE combines asset management and monitoring in the same module which promotes compatibility and ease of use.

The reviewer notes the extensive range of reporting options offered by the software and that one of Prefix NE’s key features is its ability to report in real-time as it operates with agents installed on every managed system.

In July, Prefix IT announced a fifth module in the PrefixNE suite of network management tools, to provide remote management of critical business applications and support business continuity. The new software enables users to avoid potential business disruption through real-time alerts and powerful drill-down diagnostic tools. The launch makes PrefixNE the market’s most comprehensive and scalable real time asset and network management tool, suitable for large organisations through to small SMEs.

Using an intuitive graphical interface, key network performance indicators are measured in real time and matched against tailor-able, rule-based parameters which are created by network managers. Should any parameters be breeched, automatic alerts will be triggered and delivered either via on-screen pop-ups, email, or where necessary applications exist, by SMS to PDA or other mobile device. Prefix Critical Alerts then allows the network manager to drill down through the network, to individual server and PC level, to diagnose the cause of the problem and take informed action quickly and effectively before performance degradation compromises a business critical application.

The software is available immediately and is sold on a subscription basis. Prices are as little as £1 per PC per month depending on the quantity and number of modules required.
