Logan Farms’ new Akaushi beef is, literally, a whole new breed of steak. Previously unavailable outside of Japan, where they are a protected national treasure, Akaushi cattle came to Texas in 1994 with the help of a legal loophole and a group of savvy businessmen. Akaushi (pronounced ah-kah-ooh-shee) cattle have been an official breed since the 1940s, when Japanese scientists began cross-breeding their own cattle with European cattle. Careful selection and monitoring kept the breed pure and created the healthiest and most delicious beef the world had ever seen. Texas is keeping the Akaushi standards high – Akaushi bred in Texas come from an elite lineage that can be traced 30 generations back. Unlike other Kobe beef, the Akaushi cattle bred in Texas have not been cross bred and have a pure bloodline.
Unlike most American beef, Akaushi beef is marbled throughout the muscle instead of just around the outside. That means that Akaushi meat packs a rich, buttery flavor that simply can’t be matched by most U.S. breeds. Akaushi cattle are raised on a natural diet of grasses and grains and given more roaming space than most herds. This meticulous care has helped Texas Akaushi retain the same quality as their Japanese counterparts – and given the U.S. an entirely new kind of steak.
The health benefits of Akaushi steaks begin with fat – in fact, Akaushi beef contains more monounsaturated fat (the “good fat”) than any other U.S. beef. Monounsaturated fat – the same fat found in olive oil – has been proven to help lower cholesterol, prevent heart disease, and even promote weight loss. Akaushi beef also has the lowest cholesterol of almost any meat in the U.S. A two-ounce serving of Akaushi beef contains 10 milligrams of cholesterol. The same serving of chicken contains 32 milligrams of cholesterol.
