Local 8-Year-old Participates in Learn to Golf Clinic Designed for Children with Physical Challenges

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children patients recently participated in a Learn to Golf clinic in Waco, Texas, taught by allied healthcare and golf professionals specially trained to teach children with physical challenges. Junior golfers learned about golf safety, etiquette, driving, chipping and putting.TSRHC’s Learn to Golf program is designed for patients with challenging physical conditions. The Learn to Golf program provides the tools and instruction needed for patients to participate in and reap the rehabilitative benefits of golf. Clinics are offered throughout the year in Texas cities including Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Waco, Longview and Lubbock. This year, the program has expanded to include Tyler and Wichita Falls.
Support for the Learn to Golf program is provided by funds from TSRHC donors, local businesses and individuals, PGA, Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation and a multi-year grant provided by the United States Golf Association to aid in the expansion and enhancement of the program. There is no charge for patients to participate.
TSRHC patient Lauren Putnam, age 8 of Robinson, Texas, attended her first Learn to Golf clinic. She has been a patient at TSRHC since she was 4 years old and is being treated for a disorder that affects the growth of her bones and causes her movement to be restricted. Lauren looked forward to her first Learn to Golf clinic as a way to meet other TSRHC patients and to explore her interest in golf. She enjoys dancing and has taken ballet, tap and jazz for the last two years.
Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children is one of the nation’s leading pediatric centers for the treatment of orthopedic conditions, certain related neurological disorders and learning disorders, such as dyslexia.
