Lee Biosolutions at the Forefront of Renin Production Manufacturer of “Solutions on Demand” Stands Alone in Providing Enzyme Critical to Cardio Research

St. Louis, Missouri – After a 10-year depletion of all known supplies of Renin, Lee Biosolutions has brought the enzyme up to current assay standards and geared up production on the marker that’s critical in hypertension research, among others.

According to Lee Biosolutions president, Burton Lee, the company recognized the lack of this important enzyme as the research world watched the supplies going down. “We had the raw materials, human kidneys, needed to produce the Renin,” said Lee. “We also had the R & D capabilities to isolate, purify and stabilize the enzyme. We worked hard to perfect the process so that we could begin production and answer the demands of the research community.”

Renin is an enzyme derived from human kidneys that plays a crucial role in cardiovascular research, both in terms of diagnostics and pharmaceuticals. This research is resulting in new classes of drugs to manage hypertension. In March 2005, Novartis Pharmaceuticals announced the first daily-dose rennin inhibitor to treat hypertension and improve organ protection.

Its potential reach, however, is much wider, and includes Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, and pituitary disease. Without Lee Biosolutions’ production of Renin, research would have been hindered as the previous supplies were depleted.

“The research is critical to many health issues we face,” said Lee. “Once the Renin was used up, researchers would have been forced to derive their own Renin as they needed it. That takes vital dollars away from the research itself. Our production of Renin allows that money to be spent where it’s needed – in developing accurate tests and effective treatments for these serious illnesses.”

For over 30 years, Lee Biosolutions has been providing proteins, enzymes and other materials to research facilities around the country that work to advance the healthcare industry. By providing Solutions on Demand, Lee Biosolutions has become the preferred source for materials such as Renin and myeloperoxidase (MPO).
