Tampa Bay, FL August 2007 – On August 20, over 500 students will enter the Terrace Community Middle School building for the first time. The award-winning charter school outgrew its previous location at MOSI in Tampa and has moved to a brand new facility in Thonotosassa, Florida. Nexxtworks, Inc., a telecommunications company located in the Tampa Bay Area, helped make this transition possible by donating and installing an entire telecommunications system. This state-of-the-art phone system, Nortel Networks Option 11C, supports up to 700 total ports. Each room in the school will be equipped with a digital phone, making it possible to contact every classroom and teacher on campus. The previous phone system was left at MOSI as part of their leasing agreement.
“There was not a lot of funding appropriated for this type of thing,” Meichelle Long, IT Director for TCMS explained. “If Nexxtworks would not have donated the phone system, money would have been taken from the classroom, which would have directly affected the kids.”
Teachers will have their own voicemail and phone extensions, although before some teachers shared these things due to the budget constraints. Teachers can also make outside calls directly from the classroom, which can allow for phone conferences with parents and emergency calls. At MOSI, the teachers had to leave their classroom for these types of calls.
“Teachers having the ability to make 911 calls from the classroom is monumental,” Richard Cartegena, President & CEO of Nexxtworks, Inc. explained. “Our kids’ safety should be first.”
Cartagena is thrilled to participate for such a worthy school. “We have been fortunate in our company’s growth, so we wanted to give back to the community in a way that could directly affect these kids in school,” Cartagena stated. “Terrace Community Middle School is one of the top charter schools in the state, and their new campus was the perfect opportunity for this donation.”
The Nortel Networks Option 11 C Phone System has a retail value of over $48,000. Nexxtworks is looking to donate more phone systems to schools, hospitals, charities and other 501 (c) (3)s. Interested candidates should call 727.725.0400, ext. 235 to see if they qualify.
