(Aug 8, 2007 – New York, NY) With its old school horns and snares and infectious backbeat, “Aunt Jackie,” the first Island Urban Music single by 22-year old Harlem native Jason Fox, is on its way to becoming the left-field dance sensation of the summer of 2007. Now in conjunction with Microsoft’s mega-huge XBOX 360 and Jermaine Dupri’s Island Urban Music division, the Def Jam Street Team, Radio Team and Online Department are ready to launch a two-month August-September promotion to maximize awareness of the song and dance nationwide. Winners will receive the coveted XBOX 360 unit.Starting this weekend, Dance-Off contests are scheduled in five cities across the north_east, supported by the major Urban radio station in each market. On-air promo_tion has already begun at Providence’s WWKX (Hot 106) in advance of the first Dance-Off, on August 4th at the Warwick Mall in Warwick, Rhode Island. The scene moves to Hartford, CT on August 8th, when the Dance-Off will take over WZMX/Hot 93.7’s weekly “Community Wednesdays” activity. Dance-Off’s will follow at The Kingessing Recreational Center in Philadelphia (promoted by WPHI) on August 10th; and in Washington, DC (via WPGC) on August 11th.
The final Dance-Off will take place August 16th in – where else but? – Harlem, at Rucker Park (on 155th Street & 8th Avenue), as part of ESPN2’s 25th anniversary EBC (Entertainer’s Basketball Classic) championship finals. The Dance-Off will be promoted by Hot 97 radio and Jason Fox will be on-hand to perform the “Aunt Jackie” with the winning finalists during half time.
At the same time, for fans around the rest of the country, the “Aunt Jackie” Dance-Off competition will live online at the Jason Fox/Island Urban Music website from now through September. Fans are invited to submit links to videos of themselves and/or others doing the “Aunt Jackie,” with the four best clips ultimately each winning an XBOX 360.
The online contest is appropriate, since “Aunt Jackie” has been a home-made DIY project from the beginning. Named after his friend Tone Wop’s actual aunt, the simple yet catchy tune became a top request at parties and talent shows after Jason put it up on MySpace. The video was the next logical step, taped on a camcorder at night by the Apollo Theatre marquee, “’cuz that was the only place at the time that had lights on.”
“I grew up on a lot of Will Smith and LL Cool J and I just felt like hip-hop has gotten so dis_torted,” says the former party promoter. “I felt it was time to bring it back to the original roots… My style is about making people happy. I’m a party person and you’ll see that through my music. I’m from Harlem and part of a big Harlem movement, but I’m repping the whole world. I get mail from Japan that I can’t even read.”
