Ultra-cheap car insurance scheme for Channel Islanders

It's not surprising that car insurance is cheaper on the Channel Islands than in the UK. Slow speeds, low risk of theft, few accidents - they all mean lower premiums. But now insurance costs on the Islands are set to drop even further, thanks to a new scheme developed by Adrian Flux Insurance.

The Flux Channel Islands Scheme aims to offer drivers the cheapest possible deals on car insurance - in some cases delivering savings of over 60% compared to Mainland prices, and around 15% compared to standard Channel Island car insurance prices.

Gerry Bucke of Flux heads the team launching the new scheme. He says: "Although insuring your car on the Islands has always been relatively cheap, when we started to develop this scheme we found that, given the risks, Channel Islanders are actually paying over the odds.

"We drew up costings and risk data and approached an underwriter. Despite the low premiums, the new scheme was given the green light very quickly."

So how much will insuring a car cost? A 28 year old man with a BMW 320i M Sport worth £25,000 will pay just £250 a year on the Channel Islands for comprehensive insurance with Flux, assuming he has maximum NCB (no claims) and limits usage to 6,000 miles per year. That's a saving of over 60% compared to the cost in London NW10, where he'd be paying £650 for identical cover.

As you'd expect, more expensive cars deliver even bigger savings - a 40 year old driving a 2003 Aston Martin DB7 will pay £450 under the Flux scheme - compared to £675 across the water in Portsmouth or £1100 in NW10. But smaller cars get good deals, too. A 23 year old with a 2004 Mini One will typically pay £280, compared to £401 in Portsmouth and £525 in NW10.*

Says Gerry Bucke: "Right now we believe we can beat anyone on insurance costs on the Islands. Once it's established, our scheme should lead to other insurers dropping their prices, too."
