ACTON, Mass. — Home sewers have a hard time sharing their creations — whether they are clothes, accessories or home decoration projects. Only other sewers truly appreciate the time, attention to detail and different techniques which go into creating the one of a kind originals they are able to make.Enter PatternReview.com: Started over five years ago by sewing enthusiast and software developer Deepika Prakash, the Web site has grown to over 100,000 members who share their creations by photographing and reviewing the construction process for their projects, thus allowing the other members in the global community to peek in, learn and comment on their creations.
"I love to sew because it lets me customize the fit of the clothes I want to wear - and do so in the fabrics and styles I like. However, for a beginning sewer getting started in this hobby can be a challenge," says Prakash. "To sew effectively, you have to get comfortable with a sewing machine, understand the properties of fabrics and applicable sewing techniques, as well as choose sewing patterns that work for your body type."
But when Prakash started sewing six years ago, she could not find a Web site that provided this information in a structured and easy-to-follow way so she started PatternReview.com. "My sewing friends really liked the idea and used the site to review sewing patterns they used for projects so that they could discuss the results," she adds.
The site has since grown to contain more than 30,000 reviews, where members share information and sew increasingly sophisticated garments. Along with reviews for patterns, sewing machines and other products, the site also has an active discussion board, themed sewing contests as well as interactive sewing classes taught by subject matter experts.
MaryLynn, a PatternReview.com member since 2004, comments, "I think in many ways, PR is the cyberspace equivalent of the old-fashioned sewing circle — women coming together to sew and to share, to chat and to commiserate, and to plan and to practice."
