Spice Reunion Has Girl and Ticket Power
July 28, 2007 (PRLEAP.COM) Entertainment News
The Spice Girls, due to popular demand, have reunited for an 11 date, worldwide reunion tour commencing in December. Initial ticket demand is high, though venue and pricing details are still unknown. Back by popular demand, The Spice Girls have announced an 11 date, eight continent reunion tour kicking off in Los Angeles in December and continuing through January. More than 1 million fans have flooded the group’s site, seeking ticket applications for the tour. The girls official website, TheSpiceGirls.com, is reportedly receiving more than 10 requests per second and hope to give rise to a total of more than 5 million requests by early to mid July. During a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, Melanie (Sporty Spice) Chisholm, alluded at the addition of more dates if demand for tickets sales proves to be high. The most recent posting on the girls website gives fans what they really really want, the chance to make their city, “SPICE CITY”. Fans submit their desired location online and the city with the most votes will become “SPICE CITY” and will be guaranteed as an additional stop on the reunion tour.
The Spice Girls announcement is the latest in a long line of British pop acts willing to set their differences aside in hopes of reviving their glory days. In recent years bands including Take That, The Verve and most notably, The Police have regrouped for new albums and/or tours. Ticket sales to The Police, one of the most eagerly awaited tours of the year, sold out in minutes for most shows, topping out at $240 per ticket in the primary market. Fans and brokers alike who purchased with the hopes of reselling are continually finding it tough to unload their tickets, let alone make any profit. Though the Spice Girls website states, "To make it fair, we will randomly pick who gets to buy tickets", as with any concert there will no doubt be resale demand. The only question is, how much? Fans will be notified if they have won the ticket lottery no later than October 1st and will then have 72 hours to complete the transaction, at a limit of 6 tickets per order.
The original five Spice Girls have not performed together since 1998, when they embarked upon a sell-out 102 date world tour covering Europe and North America. The Spiceworld Tour kicked off in Dublin, Ireland on February 24, 1998 before moving on to mainland Europe and then returning to Britain for 14 gigs at Wembley Arena and Birmingham’s NEC Arena. Shows were performed in North America throughout the summer months with ticket prices in the secondary market reaching as high as $300. Brokers at ShowTimeTickets.com who experienced Spice Mania the first time around are predicting a high face value for the reunion tour, countered by a low resale value similar to this summers Police Tour. "The trend we’re seeing with all the big reunion concerts is a high face value which coincides with all of the initial hype and excitement. but once the initial buzz dies down and then quite often extra shows are added, these circumstances create more availability and bring down demand which in turn lowers prices.”
The concerts will be the group's first, since breaking up in 2001, and the first with all five of the original group since Geri Halliwell quit to pursue a solo career in May of 1998 only four years after the bands inception. The remaining four girls carried on until ultimately disbanding after their 2000 album, ‘Forever’, failed to garner the success of previous records.
The Spice Girls boasted album sales of 55 million during their transiently brilliant career. The five singers are now all in their 30s. Melanie (Scary Spice) Brown, Geri (Ginger Spice) Halliwell and Victoria (Posh Spice) Beckham are mothers and Emma (Baby Spice) Bunton is expected to give birth sometime in August. Victoria and her soccer superstar husband David Beckham are currently in the middle of a highly publicized move to the United States where David will play for Major League Soccer franchise, LA Galaxy. Family members will accompany the girls on the tour bus, including the seven children they will have between them. Victoria has been quoted online at dailymail.co.uk saying, "I am so excited about this tour - I might get to be the cool one in the family for once!"
