Infection Trends, New Drugs Revive Flagging Antibiotic Market

New York, June 9, 2005 — According to a new report released today from Kalorama Information, the world market for prescription antibacterial medications will recover from a disappointing 2004 and pass the $24 billion mark for 2005. After a decline of nearly 4% in 2004, growth will return to the market as new products gain approval and trends in infection rates and treatment push the market ahead sharply.

The new study, The World Market for Anti-Infectives Vol II: Antibacterials, found certain traditional antibiotic classes, such as the mature macrolide class, will continue to decline in market value as the segment becomes highly genericized. However, other classes, including newer drugs such as oxazolidinones and carbapenems, will show excellent growth as antibiotic resistance continues to be a growing problem for older agents.

“Resistance creates both opportunities and threats to antibacterial developers,” notes Melissa Elder, the author of the report. “Newer agents to combat problem strains will certainly meet with market success and command much higher prices, but anti-resistance strategies in the clinic, such as antibiotic cycling and limits on use, are threats to sustained revenue models.”

In addition to a thorough analysis of the current market, the report forecasts the market through 2009 for seven drug types: cephalosporins, macrolides, penicillins, quinolones, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, and other antibiotics, segmenting the market by region and infection type, and providing 2004 market shares of both top competitors and top products in each class.

The volume is the second in a series of market studies on anti-infective drugs worldwide. The other volumes are Volume I: Antifungals (published in April) and Volume III: Antivirals (to be published next month).
