‘Industriacide’ creator combines grotesque and charming in new ‘Mess’

For Immediate Release: Lynnwood, WA July 6, 2007 - Sean Dietrich, creator of Industriacide and Fervor, returns to his ink-stained roots with a new tale of shadow and escape in Mess (Rorschach Entertainment, 2007). Vincent, born with arms four feet long and legs only twelve inches in length, might look like a monster, but he’s also the best piano player and jingle-writer in the city. After 25 years spent performing at the same bar, hidden behind a curtain to showcase his music while hiding his deformities, Vincent—left to die in a dumpster by parents never meant to have him—finds his life turned upside down as shots ring out on his journey home one night. The gunfire lands Vincent in the hospital, but also brings the sorrow of his life into focus—too long has he lived behind the curtain, dulling his pain with whiskey and finding solace only in the comforting conversations he has with the beautiful waitress who gives him a shoulder to lean on.
Turning to the only man who has any clue about his past—the detective who found him as an infant in that dumpster like just another bag of trash—Vincent sets out to find a way to start over, even if it means faking his own death to break free of his life.
“I wanted to tell the story of someone who achieves a small, initial piece of success only to spend too much time daydreaming about climbing to greater heights until he instead fades into oblivion,” says Dietrich. Vincent “doesn't realize he has to actually keep struggling in order to achieve his dreams.”
The book marks a personal note for the author.
“There was a time in my life where I was in the same situation as Vincent, and wanted to write a reminder that talents don’t sell themselves,” says Dietrich.
Mess is also a return to the darker imagery used in Dietrich’s earlier work.
“I actually overheard some of my fans saying they liked how much ‘darker’ the artwork looked in 'industriacide,’” says Dietrich. “I took their advice and I'm very proud and happy at how the artwork's atmosphere has lived up to the title of this story.”
Praise for Dietrich’s Fervor and Industriacide (both published by Rorschach Entertainment):
"…the true star here is Dietrich’s edgy, hyperactive art; he does a terrific job of selling the nasty reality of each moment in this woman’s life, and you believe in it as you pore through each page."

“The art's really attractive, reminiscent of Arthur Suydam's work, and makes unusually good use of the black and white medium, perfectly serving a tale of psychotic alienation, and the dialogue, mostly very descriptive captions, sweep you along, even if it's difficult to figure out what's actually going on. Unlike most comics, INDUSTRIACIDE is a unique, compelling experience.”
