Collecting Kitchenware or household items offers a wealth of opportunities for thecollector. Interests may lead you to primitive rarities or newer items. Anything is fair
game and I say “Go for it.” With any collection you should follow your heart and interests
and buy things that will add to your quality of life.
Collectors should ask themselves if they want to limit their collection to a specific item,
era, style, or price range. One of the nice things about kitchen and household collectibles
is that they are affordable and everyone has access to them. Some people specialize in
Advertising, for others it may be Yelloware, and some may just buy what strikes their
fancy.
Recently there has been a large interest in items from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. You will
often here the term retro used to describe these items. Pyrex and Fire King has seen a
rebirth among the baby boomers and their children alike. One of the reasons is that they
made a darn good product that is still functional today. Another is that they were very
colorful and lend themselves to decorating themes. Of course this renewed interest has
also caused an upswing in prices. Therefore it pays to be informed about items you are
interested in acquiring. Market value on many items have increased way beyond book
value. However, there are still deals to be had for those who keep their eyes open.
Another reason for kitchen or household collecting is that it’s fun. Gadgets from 50 or 60
years ago can put a twinkle in your eye and make you outright giddy just looking at them.
How can you look at a spaghetti fork that turns to wind your pasta and not chuckle. When
I saw a box marked Lampshade Cleaner and another marked Dusting Paper, I was
downright fascinated at the ingenuity of the manufacturer. True many of the products
didn’t work very well, but then nobody really cared, if they made household chores just a
little bit easier.
Mama’s Treasures specializes in kitchenalia of all kinds from Primitive through the 1970’s.
So if you need a screen or venetian blind cleaner, an unopened box of Ivory Snow,
Woodbury hand cream, a Pyrex casserole, or some Hazel Atlas glasses, just drop on buy.
