London, UK (Saturday)— "Looking for an effective and fun way to speak, read and write Chinese?" The slogan on the attractive bilingual poster drew more than 80 parents, teachers, and public to the launching of Xihaha Chinese Children Bookfair at Enfield and Barnet Chinese Association (EBCA)/ London Pei Ying Chinese School last Saturday. This first public activity, organised by Xihaha Ltd, received strong support from Mr. Chin-Sin Tham, the School Head Teacher, and the school committee; part of the proceeds from this bookfair went to the School Development Fund.“We hope to provide a new channel for people, especially children, who are interested to learn Chinese. It is not easy to find a comprehensive range of Chinese children books in the United Kingdom; least of all, learning materials which are innovative and fun.” Miss Stephanie Tang explained why she and her partner, Miss Chooi-Huey Ng, decided to set up Xihaha Ltd in January this year. “With China becoming one of the key players in the global economy, the interest to learn Chinese is growing and will continue to escalate in years to come. Knowing the Chinese language is becoming an important asset and will give your children a head start in the future competitive world market,” she said.
Research by the German University of Goettingen and the East China Normal University in Shanghai found that, students who know Chinese language were found to be much better at processing information and they have a better memory compared to their counterparts. By using a wide-ranging of books, CD/VCD/DVD and computer soft wares, Xihaha hopes to make learning the language both fun and effective. These learning materials were sampled from many countries and most of them were specially developed by linguistic and education experts. “We believe that children learn best when they enjoy the learning process. What better way to learn Chinese and its culture than through reading and listening to interesting stories, as well as having fun with painting, playing computer games, and singing!” Stephanie added.
