FUTURE TOWNS LAUNCHES NEW DISASTER MANAGEMENT WEBSITE

Given the recent earthquake in Kent and Essex and the recent floods across the country, it couldn’t be more timely to talk about protecting ourselves and our communities against disasters. Future Towns has been launched online as offering solutions to a full range of disaster scenarios. It discusses the frequency and impact of disasters with free essay downloads from CEO and journalist Ben Bamber.

A recent YouGov poll on disasters commissioned by Future Towns.

Of those surveyed 79% say they feel their homes are adequately protected from disasters. This may indicate faith in the higher standards of UK home building and/or may reflect they are underestimating or uninformed about the kind of threats that may affect them in the future.
There was a higher percentage of 18 – 29 year olds who feel that their homes are not adequately protected. 7% of those surveyed felt that their homes were not adequately protected, whereas double that figure (14%) is found in the 18-29 age range.
14% of those surveyed did not know whether they were adequately protected or not, which indicates that people are uninformed about risk. In the 18-29 category this rises to 19%.
A whopping 89% of people surveyed said they have not spent any money on protecting their homes from disasters. 5% of those surveyed said they had spent money on protecting their homes, leaving 6% who didn’t know whether money had been spent by others in their household or not.
