“Based on the latest data available for 2003, heart disease and cancer remain the leading causes of death in the United States,” says Jack Shapiro, healthcare marketing consultant, futurist, broadcast journalist and public speaker.
Fifteen leading causes of death account for 83% of American mortalities each year. These include:
1) Diseases of the heart;
2) Malignant neoplasms;
3) Cerebrovascular diseases;
4) Chronic lower respiratory diseases;
5) Accidents (unintentional injuries);
6) Diabetes mellitus;
7) Influenza and pneumonia;
8) Alzheimer’s Disease;
9) Nephritis and related diseases;
10) Septicemia;
11) Suicide;
12) Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis;
13) Essential primary hypertension and hypertensive renal disease;
14) Parkinson’s Disease;
15) Pneumonitis
Shapiro points out that many of these causes of death are a reflection of the aging of our population. Parkinson’s Disease, for example, appears on this list for the first time as one of the fifteen leading causes of death in the U.S. in 2003. Interestingly, homicide dropped out of the 15 leading causes of death in that year.
