Convenient Travel and On-the-Go Products Help Boost Pet Supplies Market to $11 Billion by 2009

New York, June 8, 2007— Pet travel, home assistance and on-the-go products, playing on the convenience and emotional needs of pet owners, are expected to assume an expanding role in the continuing growth of the overall pet supply market, which is projected to surpass $11 billion by 2009, according to Pet Travel and Convenience Products, a new report from market research publisher Packaged Facts.

In both mass and pet specialty channels, convenience leads the pack over most other purchasing factors, influencing 85% of mass-market shoppers in 2006, up from 83% in 2005. New pet convenience product lines grew by nearly 20% between 2005 and 2006, and the number of pet convenience product lines specifically positioned as “upscale” jumped from 7 in 2002 to 41 in 2006.

Two-thirds of pet owners travel with their pets, and more than 30 “human-only” companies have entered the pet product market, breeding significant opportunities for the pet products market to capitalize on the growing bond between owners and their pets. Pet shoppers now have the luxury to include everything from quick-cleansing pet wipes and pet strollers to portable feeding systems and calming supplements to their growing pet arsenals.

“More and more products for pets are being made to resemble those for humans,” said Don Montuori, the publisher of Packaged Facts. “This trend reflects both practical considerations and the strategy of marketers to strike an emotional chord among pet owners, who are thinking in human terms as they shop and applying their own preferences to the pet products they select.”

Pet Travel and Convenience Products examines non-food pet travel and on-the-go products such as portable kennels, backpacks and waste disposal systems, as well as home assistance products, including self-cleaning litter boxes, automatic feeders, easy-entry ramps and automatic pet doors. The report analyzes the products themselves and the trends driving their popularity among U.S. pet owners, as well as trends in new product development and marketing.
