SANTA CLARA, CA–May 29, 2007–Real-Time Innovations (RTI), The Real-Time Middleware Experts, today announced the award of a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase II contract by the Naval Air Systems (NAVAIR) Command. The SBIR program, which is federally funded, facilitates the financing of small-business research and development activities. It enables the initial development of concepts and inventions with significant potential in advancing the state of the art and development of innovative products.

RTI was awarded this SBIR to research technologies relevant to an ongoing comprehensive upgrade to the Navy E-2C Hawkeye weapons system. The E-2C Hawkeye is a tactical airborne early-warning system that provides a carrier-based platform for identifying and analyzing threats, coordinating surveillance, and directing countermeasures in defensive roles. The contract awarded RTI is a Phase II SBIR effort with a value of $600,000, along with a $150,000 option for additional follow-on development.

“We’re proud of our ability to meet the technology needs of advanced DOD development programs,” said Joe Schlesselman, director of Market Development, Aerospace and Defense at RTI. “The RTI Data Distribution Service enables complex systems such as the E-2C Hawkeye to achieve high levels of data integration and performance that are not possible with conventional solutions.”

This SBIR award will be used for continued research and development with respect to the following four aspects of RTI Data Distribution Service that impact the E-2C Hawkeye upgrade program:
* Performance optimization, especially latency and data throughput
* Portability across architectures, hardware and operating systems
* Security best practices as defined by Common Criteria Information Assurance
* Tools related to the development and quality of applications taking advantage of features in RTI Data Distribution Service

RTI Data Distribution Service is distributed information networking software that makes it easy to develop applications that communicate over a network. The software is specifically designed for distributed applications that need to process real-time data. Using a publish-subscribe model for data transfer, RTI Data Distribution Service provides fast and highly predictable performance along with scalability across large distributed applications and networks. RTI also delivers tools to aid in the development of distributed applications, real-time data persistence and connectivity to enterprise networks.

“This SBIR award demonstrates once again the value of RTI’s innovative technology and expertise in real-time data-distribution technologies and advanced tool development,” said Gerardo Pardo-Castellote, chief technology officer of RTI. “The SBIR program enables technology innovators to invest in technologies that deliver significant benefits to both government and society in general. This effort will improve an important technology for use in government and commercial projects that require real-time data availability across a network.”
