Washington, DC — On May 22, The Black Author Showcase will present a selection of new books by authors living in the Washington, DC, metro area. The event will take place at the Psalms 117 Coffeehouse in Silver Spring, Maryland from 5 to 8 PM. These Black writers are challenging readers with topics that big name, establishment publishers would believe difficult to promote or financially justify to their boards of directors.
Dr. Rey O. Harris author of Motivational Morsels comments, "African American writers are leaping over the roadblocks and restrictions that Manhattan publishers put on Black books. The industry has purposely stymied the productivity of Black writers, citing that minorities don't read therefore don't buy books. But times are changing."
Metro DC authors presenting their new works include: Dr. Rey Harris, Motivational Morsels; Cary T. Faison, Jr., White Slaves and Indians in the Family; William Powell, Valkyrie; Theresa Grant, Hope and Desire; Stafford L. Battle, co-author of AFROCyberSpace: 1000+ African American Websites That Will Change Your World; and Leutrell "Mike" Osborne, Black Man in the CIA.
Stafford Battle, a digital designer at Howard University and author of AFROCyberspace, added, "It's great to see so many Black faces publishing books by traditional and nontraditional means. We don't need New York mega publishers. On demand production services and the Internet allows small books to create big names in American literature based on talent and writing skill; and not solely on profit margins for foreign investors."
