FARMINGTON HILLS, MICH. (May 2007) — A joint venture between the Jervis B. Webb Company and Alberici Constructors was awarded a $29.6 million contract with Northwest Airlines to install baggage handling, in-line Explosive Detection Systems (EDS), and related equipment in the McNamara Terminal/Northwest WorldGateway at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). Additionally, the contract calls for extensive modifications to the baggage handling control system and the installation of more than 1.2 miles of conveyors. The project is scheduled to be completed in March of 2009.“Passenger volume at the McNamara Terminal has risen steadily over the past several years. Expansion of the automated baggage screening system was needed in order to handle the increased volume of checked bags,” said Kenneth Hamel, Webb’s Vice President of Airport Systems. “The Webb Company has extensive experience in providing baggage handling systems for airports around the world. We are happy to provide this new system, which will improve baggage handling operations at our home airport.”
The new in-line EDS conveyor system will eliminate the need for baggage screening machines in the airport’s lobby. Implementation of the upgraded baggage security system will be coordinated with ongoing airline operations. Webb’s baggage handling systems are currently in use at more than 50 U.S. and international airports.
Alberici will perform the mechanical installations and related activities associated with the new project. Webb previously worked with Alberici on a prior baggage handling project at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport that was completed in 2005.
“We are excited to work with Jervis. B. Webb Company on another project that will provide a valuable service to Northwest Airlines and the travelers that rely on Detroit Metro Airport,” said Mark Okroy, vice president and general manager of Alberici’s Livonia office.
