Englewood, NJ (April, 2007) – Old Tappan native Chelsea Palermo is only 21 years old and, the way she sees it, nothing could better qualify her to tackle “Lemon Drop,” “My Funny Valentine,”or an entire album full of fresh takes on the standards. Her forthcoming release is being put out by A major Record Company and was recorded under the musical direction of Joe Muccioli, known for his work with Joe Piscopo and The Redbank Jazz Arts, where Chelsea has performed for the past few years.
The album also features guest artists Warren Vaché on trumpet and Latin percussionist Luisito Quintero. It was recorded entirely at Bennett Studios in Englewood, New Jersey.
Palermo’s renditions are noted as much for the maturity of their execution as for the youth and vibrancy they display. While Palermo is a seasoned interpreter who has grown up with jazz and has almost 200 songs in her repertoire, she also has her generation’s sensibilities and youthful energy to burn.
Not many artists who tackle “My Funny Valentine” have a genuine appreciation for Gwen Stefani. “When I was a kid, I was drawn to the energy of pop music and R&B—and I always will be,” Chelsea said recently, “However, I also appreciated the sophistication and nuance of jazz—and I always wished I could share that with my friends.”
It looks like Palermo is poised to do just that: bringing the American songbook to her peers—and making it entirely her own in the process.
