STVP has done a case study on Technology Venture Firm – Brovis Wireless Networks. The case study outlines how Technology start-up firms can be global in nature from the get go. Case study profiles Brovis Wireless Networks’ CEO Mr.Muthu S Logan as a global entrepreneur. STVP narrowed down on Brovis Wireless Networks for its unique model that leverages globalization, addressing very large and rapidly growing segments within the Broadband Wireless space. “Brovis a Silicon Valley based firm, leverages US for knowledge platform, India for R&D and knowledge workforce, and Taiwan for contract manufacturing. Our Indian operation integrates value created in different parts of the world and addresses global market needs. Globalization has forced entrepreneurs to think global right from day one, and there by deliver products and services that don’t need any protection mechanism to make it survive in the domestic as well as in the international markets” says Muthu Logan, CEO, BroVis Wireless Networks.
“The case study represents first of its kind for Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP). Although one or two previous studies have focused on the WiFi/WiMAX industry, none has honed in on the Indian Subcontinent and other emerging markets. The case study focuses on how entrepreneur driven technology ventures can leverage globalization and be successful” says Professor Tom Kosnik, Consulting Professor in the Management Science and Engineering Department at Stanford University.
With most number of commercial Wi-MAX deployments in the world, the Indian Telecom Industry is all set to witness prolific growth in coming years. For the end user, affordable cutting edge technology is there for the taking. The findings of the case study fortify the growth saga. Clearly going global is not just restricted to big firms. Any firm irrespective of its size can attain global status by virtue of global thinking and outlook, right from day one of its inception. BroVis has chosen a path-breaking model to capitalize on the India boom as well as growth in other emerging regions in South-East Asia, Middle East, China, Africa, Europe and the Americas.
About Brovis Wireless Networks and its founding team
BroVis Wireless Networks is a global firm headquartered in California USA, with product development Head Quarters in Chennai and regional sales offices in Bangalore and Mumbai, India and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. BroVis is the first equipment developer and manufacturer of Radio based hardware and software with a mission to provide cost-effective, integrated and standards based broadband wireless access systems for Telcos, Service providers and Enterprises in the Indian Subcontinent, Asia Pac, North America, MEA and other emerging regions.
Muthu Logan founded BroVis in mid-2003 with a vision of providing affordable broadband to the masses. Born in India, Logan graduated from University of Texas with a M.S. and an MBA. Two decades of work for American companies followed this education. He held various engineering and management positions at companies such as Ascend Communications, Intel, and Solectron. Immediately before founding BroVis, he served as Product Line Director for the DSL Broadband Access group at Lucent Technologies.
Although this education and work experience gave him insight into Western management practices and other best practices of leading U.S. technology companies, Logan felt the lack of a critical component: global entrepreneurship. Logan noted, “Somehow, I had an urge to be a global entrepreneur as Silicon Valley was a bit limiting for me.” The bust of the Internet bubble in Silicon Valley in the early 2000s marked the time when Logan began executing his vision for BroVis.
The company’s presence in Silicon Valley and India reflected Logan’s professional experience and cultural roots, respectively. To enable access to funding sources and to bring global credibility to his fledgling startup, Logan decided to set up corporate headquarters in Cupertino, California. At the same time, to take advantage of India’s intellectual capital and cost efficiency, he centralized operations and research and development (R&D) efforts in the South Indian city of Chennai. “We were one of the first companies to leverage technologies and expertise from United States and India to focus on emerging and mainstream wireless markets,” noted Logan.
Similar to Logan, other members of the BroVis team had entrepreneurial experience as well as broadband domain expertise. Babu Mandava, technology strategist and board member for BroVis, was a founder of Centillium Communications, a NASDAQ-listed semiconductor company focused on broadband products. A recent addition to the company was Dr. Paul Kim, Chairman of BroVis, who was the founding and managing partner of Parakletos @Ventures, LLC, a Silicon Valley VC firm with investments in the United States, India, China, and Korea.
BroVis Wireless Networks offers Wi-MAX and Wi-Fi based Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) systems, comprising of AS1000 series, AC100 series and the AS500. All Brovis products are powered by home grown innovative technologies like TrueEXORTM (for Non-Line of sight capabilities) and BroViewTM (for infrastructure management). Brovis is one of the leading full-system providers with complete end-end management capabilities. Brovis leverages cutting edge radio technology which is FCC, ETSI and SIRIM certified.
