Newport News, VA — The Junior League of Hampton Roads, Inc. (JLHR) is bringing back its popular “Rummage on the River, The Big Yard Sale”. The sale will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2007 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 451 Oriana Road in the Newport Crossing Shopping Center (near the corner of Denbigh and Warwick Blvds). Items offered for sale will include new and gently used designer clothing, children’s clothing, furniture, appliances, collectibles, toys and much, much more at affordable prices. This community wide rummage sale will raise money for the JLHR’s New Member program, “Cribs for Kids”. The Junior League has partnered with SIDS of Pennsylvania to purchase cribs for families on the Peninsula. According to the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of National SIDS & Infant Death Program Support Center, 90 babies in Virginia died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in 2005. That same year, another 35 babies in Virginia died of strangulation or suffocation in their beds. Many of these babies did not have a safe place to sleep. The cribs will be donated to designated families throughout the Peninsula by referrals from area agencies. Families will receive safe cribs, mattresses, linens and educational information on safe sleeping practices.
