Nintendo DS sells 200,000 in the UK

The latest sales figures from Nintendo UK show that the DS console has sold through 200,000 units in this market since it launched in mid-March, adding to a worldwide sales total of well over three million units.

The figure follows on from a launch week which saw 87,000 units of the console being sold, making the DS into the fastest-selling console ever in the UK, and demonstrates that the system has sustained strong sales in the weeks following launch.

The top selling games for the platform to date are, unsurprisingly, Super Mario 64 DS and WarioWare Touched!, and Nintendo is hoping for a strong performance next month from titles such as Yoshi Touch and Go, Need for Speed Underground 2 and Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.

Nintendo is understandably pleased with the performance of the DS in a market which is traditionally one of the toughest for the Japanese giant, with Nintendo UK general manager David Yarnton describing the launch as an "unprecedented success".

"Gamers new and old have embraced the Nintendo DS and have left no doubt that it is the new must have handheld console," he enthused. "Nintendo set out to create a new way of hand-held gaming, offering an innovative and enjoyable experience and with the new Nintendo DS, and we have certainly accomplished this."

Of course, Nintendo's strong performance will have been assisted in no small part by the non-arrival of Sony's PlayStation Portable, which isn't due to arrive in Europe until the beginning of September - almost six months after the Nintendo DS, and over nine months after it was originally meant to appear in late 2004.
