The event is sponsored by “Fans of Barbaro” and Delaware Park. “Fans of Barbaro” are a group of people from around the world who have been captivated by the racehorse Barbaro, his racing career and subsequent struggle for survival. They gathered online at www.timwoolleyracing.com and were kept abreast of Barbaro's condition by Alex Brown, exercise rider out of Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland. During this period they became more aware of horse racing and horse welfare issues. The group is active is raising public awareness of horse slaughter. Recently horse slaughter plants in the US were closed down, but it remains critical to push through federal legislation that will prevent the transportation of horses for slaughter to Mexico and Canada.
As a group they continue to work on Barbaro's legacy and to date they have rescued more than 400 horses from horse slaughter and raised money for a variety of horse related causes including Laminitis research and the Barbaro Fund.
According to Sharon Crumb, event co-organizer, “More than 300 people have signed up for the barbecue in the Grove at Delaware Park and more are anticipated to sign up by the April 15, deadline. Our goal is to have more than 500 people in attendance for the Celebration of Barbaro's Life and we’re hoping to hit our milestone of having rescued more than 500 horses by then as well.”
“The events surrounding Barbaro’s unfortunate situation raised awareness of the general public about the plight of race horses in America and the throwaway mentality of some of the people involved in racing,” says Jo Deibel, President of Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue, Inc. of Glenville, Pennsylvania. www.saveahorsenow.org “Even in his untimely death Barbaro has probably done more good for the plight of horses than any other race horse in American history.” Angel Acres, a non-profit organization which feeds and cares for the rescued thoroughbreds until they are adopted, has been invited to attend the event as a special guest of the “Fans of Barbaro” organization.
