March 23, 2007 — On March 16th ,2007 a small group of Australia’s leading designers, press, local and state Government representatives visited a new Earth friendly business based in Byronshire. This new business produces a novel, long-lasting biodegradable material made solely from plant-based fibres based on a patent developed by Director and Chief Technology Officer of Zelfo Australia, Martin Ernegg. The launch was opened by a representative of the Bunjalung tribe representing Australian Indigenous land-owners, the Mayor of Byronshire Council, honourable Jan Barham. Managing Director of the council, and Greens representative MLC Ian Cohen were also present.
The first run of Zelfo was made using waste paper collected from the local Byronshire Council. A bowl made from this material was presented to the Council for display. The world’s first didgeridoo made from paper was also auctioned off, after a superb demomstration by Wild Marmalade’s Si. The ‘boomerang bowl’ designed by Fuerst and Bartosch made from the same council waste paper was purchased by Ian Cohen, MLC who will display the product in his Sydney NSW parliament office. Ian has said he will lobby Australian Federal Parliament to supply their paper waste to Zelfo for production into furniture used by the Australian Government – another potential world first for Zelfo.
On display were items about to be made by Zelfo include the new ‘Stick’ lamp which is also a hat stand designed by Simon Duff of Fusedesign.
