Blue Mountain Project Plans to Expand Free Clinic

The Blue Mountain Project has launched a capital campaign for $25,000 to upgrade an existing space adjacent to the Hagley Gap Clinic into a dormitory with bathroom facilities supplied with water treated by a modern purification system. This space will be used to house visiting medical professionals and other volunteers.

The Hagley Gap Clinic is located in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica is staffed by a Jamaican nurse. This free clinic opened in 2006 and provides treatment for hypertension, diabetes, STDs and wound care. Northwestern University-AID and University of Michigan medical schools have begun developing long-term relationship with BMP to serve this poverty stricken area. The Blue Mountain Project is working to provide these volunteers with a disease-free water supply and a secure place to sleep. Currently volunteers must stay on the concrete floor of a one-room community center and water is taken from a river where community members bathe and do laundry. It has been confirmed that the water is unfit for human consumption without a UV and carbon water filtration system.
