Nokia has announced that after successful trials of Software Updater application last year, it is expanding the application which will allow people to update the software on their mobile handset without the need to travel to a service location or carrier-related retail shop. The Software updater is a free application that phone users can download to their computers. Once installed on computer, users connect their compatible mobile phone via USB and the software will detect the device, determine if updates are available or not, and then help mobile users perform the update. According to the Nokia, it works with about 37 different phone models, including the E Series and N Series devices. Updates can also be performed over the air, but is not possible through Bluetooth. Nokia also says user data (contacts, applications, photos, games) will be erased during the Software Updating process and needs to be backed up beforehand.
