The road that led Dr. Aziz Anis from his birthplace in war-torn Egypt to becoming a prominent physician in the Midwestern United States has been a long one – filled with professional triumphs, heartbreaking tragedies, and the overwhelming power of faith. Dr. Anis shares this remarkable journey in his memoir, A Letter to Sophie: The Story of an Immigrant. The recently published book has received both the Editor’s Choice and the Publisher’s Choice awards from publisher iUniverse.

Anis’s powerful memoir was originally meant to chronicle his unique story for his family. What began as a letter to his granddaughter Sophie 10 years ago, today is an inspiring tale that readers from all walks of life will find fascinating. Even Anis himself is still moved by events that took place years ago.

“Every life is a story. In my story, there have been a lot of ups and downs including sadness and tragedy," he says. "It was shocking reading through certain chapters of the book – almost like reading about somebody else. Looking back I can see the magnitude of it all. I realize now that there’s always a higher power that works things out – maybe not the way we wanted or expected, but sometimes for the best.”

The journey begins in Cairo, Egypt, during World War II. While Anis never expected to end up in the United States, the tides of chance and fortune – including love, loss, peace and war – carried him from one side of the globe to the other. After building a successful career, he faced the daunting task of starting over again — from scratch. For years, he longed for a home in which to rest, but felt like a stranger in every land. He finally found that home in Lincoln, Neb., where he recently retired from his career as a prominent ophthalmologist with a successful private practice. He now lives in Kansas City, Mo.

A Letter to Sophie is currently available at the Country Club Plaza Barnes & Noble location in Kansas City. It is also available from the following online retailers: abebooks.com, amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, booksamillion.com, and iuniverse.com. The list price is $23.95.
