February 2007 – A new website, Antarctica Bound (www.antarcticabound.com), has been launched to offer explorers and wildlife lovers the widest choice of expedition cruises to the protected wilderness of Antarctica.Antarctica Bound features an extensive choice of itineraries from over 15 different expedition organisers, including Peregrine, Quark, Oceanwide Expeditions, Polar Star and GAP.
The new site is designed to make it easier for outdoor and adventure enthusiasts to find out more about discovering Antarctica, recognised as one of the last pristine wilderness landscapes and protected by the Antarctic Treaty.
A choice of itineraries each provide the opportunity to see one of the greatest wildlife shows on earth, with Humpback, Minke and Orca wales; seals including Elephant, Fur and Crab Eater; penguins such as Emperor, Rockhopper and King; plus Skua, Petrel and Albatross. Adventurers and photographers can experience some of the most spectacular scenery, with icebergs, pack ice and incredible light conditions.
All of the expeditions also offer specialist lecturers who help bring the journeys to life, while additional activities include sea kayaking, scuba diving in the Antarctic waters, camping and shore excursions, allowing visitors to experience Antarctica first hand.
The cruises take place between November and March, the Antarctic’s summer months, when temperatures varying between –20ºC and 5ºC. Starting in Ushuaia in southern Argentina, the routes take in places such as the South Shetland Islands, the Antarctic Peninsula, the Falklands and South Georgia.
Visitors to the website can search by departure date, before viewing full details on the range of ships and itineraries available. The ships range in style and include research and expedition vessels, icebreakers and expedition liners, offering a range of facilities depending on the style required.
The site also features a wide range of information on the area, including advice on photography, travel, clothing, and lectures, together with first hand experiences of the region.
Simon Rowland, managing director of Antarctica Bound, said: “The Antarctic offers an adventure experience unlike any other. Each month of their summer sees changes in the scenery and the wildlife, and the long hours of daylight create a very special environment for photography and discovery.
“With Antarctica Bound we have created the first aggregated site of expedition cruises – a one-stop shop for anyone interested in discovering this protected area. We are not only offering a comprehensive range of expeditions, but also first hand advice and information on what visitors can really expect from the scenery, wildlife and environment.”
Antarctica is 14,000,000 square kilometres in size and contains nearly 70% of the World’s fresh water. It has been visited by many of the most famous explorers, including Captain Scott who reached the South Pole on January 17, 1912, to find Amundsen had beaten his team by 33 days, and Shackleton’s Endurance Expedition in 1914 when their boat sank and the team lived on floating pack-ice for 5 months, with all surviving.
