Golden Ten for Mo & Me follows Oscar delight of The Last King of Scotland

Mo & Me, the internationally acclaimed documentary about renowned East African photojournalist, Mohamed “Mo” Amin, has received the Golden Ten Award for Best Feature Documentary at the SMTV India F.I.C.T.S. Festival in Mumbai.

Mo & Me’s victory in India is its sixth win at international film festivals. This latest accolade, coming in the same week that The Last King of Scotland made Oscar headlines, has been particularly gratifying for filmmaker Salim Amin – whose father, Mohamed Amin and his business partner, Brian Tetley were both involved in the book on which the Hollywood film is based.

Commenting from Nairobi, Salim Amin said:

“It has been an amazing week for us here at Camerapix. On Tuesday, we celebrated Forest Whitaker’s Oscar-nomination for The Last King of Scotland because my father and Brian [Tetley] had helped Giles [Foden] with Idi Amin’s characterization when he was writing the book; and Camerapix went on to provide material from our archives that appears in the film.”

“Later on, we heard the fantastic news that Mo & Me had received the award for Best Feature Documentary in Mumbai. So, as you can imagine, I am thrilled on both counts. But at the same time, I am sad that my father and Brian are not alive to enjoy these successes.”

“Through his pictures, my father was instrumental in revealing the uncontrollable swings and deadly extremes of Idi Amin’s temperament – as shown graphically in Mo & Me and depicted with chilling accuracy in The Last King of Scotland.”

Directed by Roger Mills (Himalaya; Around the World in 80 Days) and Murad Rayani (Refusing To Die) and narrated by Salim Amin, Mo & Me offers a vivid, soulful and sweeping recollection of the man whose cameras captured much of 20th century African history.



The lives of Mohamed Amin and Brian Tetley were cut tragically short on November 23rd, 1996 when hijackers took over Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 forcing the Boeing 767 to crash land in the Indian Ocean with the loss of 123 passengers and crew.
