“Many business owners have never even considered what might happen if they were injured, sick or worse” says Yvonne Weld, owner of ABLE Virtual Assistant Services and author of The Ultimate Guide to Creating a Thriving Business. “When I first started my business I never considered what would happen if something happened to me. When more and more clients began knocking on my door, I began to wonder what would happen to my clients if I vanished from the face of the earth tomorrow. It was at this point that I realized the importance of creating a procedure manual or a “prototype” if you will, of my business. Now, in the event something happened to me, my business could continue uninterrupted.” According to Statistics Canada, Labour Force Historical Review, 2003, self-employment has outperformed paid employment and led the Canadian labour market. The number of self-employed Canadians increased by 30% from 1990 to 2004. Although self-employment levels decreased between the years 1999 and 2001, it remains the prevailing growth force in the labor market. Approximately 70% of all businesses in the United States are operated as sole proprietorships primarily because they are easy and inexpensive to set up. Disability and life insurance are important and should be carried by all small business owners but it’s not enough. Often a spouse or other family member is called upon to step-in when the owner is sick, injured or dies. In many cases, the spouse or family member neither wants to nor is capable of running the company, regardless of what was discussed prior to the owner’s injury or death.
Small businesses, no matter where they are located, are often dependent on the marketing, technical or managerial skill of the owner. Take that away and the business will likely fail. That is, unless the owner has taken the time to document the processes and procedures that make the business thrive. What does it really mean to have a Thriving Business? Just like plants need essential tools to survive, so does your business. The ingredients may be different but providing them is no less important. Plants need water, sun and dirt in order to grow vigorously and healthily. Your business needs a successful team leader, a needed product or service and a plan in order to be successful and profitable. If you leave instructions for watering your plants, shouldn’t you leave instructions for running your business?
