Builders Don’t Always Flout The Law

New Survey Reveals That 90 Percent Of Builders Never Use A Mobile Phone Whilst At The Wheel 12th January 2007 – With less than eight weeks to go before new legislation introduces stiffer penalties for drivers caught using a hand-held mobile phone while driving, the UK’s builders are setting an example to other road users. New research found that 100% of builders were aware of the law banning the use of hand-held phones while driving with over 80% choosing to use a hands-free kit and 10% opting not to take calls while on the road.
The survey, commissioned by Jabra, a leading brand of audio products for the mobile consumer market, in conjunction with the Federation of Maser Builders also discovered that builders have been hiding a secret! They’re not just a bunch of white van drivers drifting from job to job, they actually run a tight, professional ship in order to stay at the top of their game.
The new research highlights the importance of in-car mobile phone calls to UK businesses, with 70 per cent of builders admitting that they had lost out on work opportunities by missing a call either while on the road or away from their mobile. Of these builders, 10% had lost contracts with a value of over £10,000. It is therefore not surprising that 80% of builders say that mobile phones are vital to the success of their business, with one in five spending up to five hours a day on the phone.
“Mobile communication is a vital part of any business today and it is clear from our survey that builders rely on their phones to do their jobs efficiently,” said Andrew Doyle, UK Country Manager, Jabra. “Our findings certainly dispel any myths that builders are unprofessional cowboys who drive around in their white vans, flouting the law by talking on their mobile phone. On the contrary, builders use mobile communications to stay ahead of the game, using Bluetooth devices to avoid a nasty fine or a run in with the law.”
From 27th February this year, drivers caught using a handheld mobile phone while driving could face a minimum fine of £60 and three fixed penalty points. Current legislation states that if drivers must use a mobile phone while at the wheel, they need to use a hands-free device and the phone must be secured in a cradle. If caught using a handheld mobile while driving, drivers could face a £30 fine. Jabra products offer a wide range of hands-free solutions, with comfort, design, functionality and price points to suit all tastes.
