Women who already feel overwhelmed by their New Year’s Resolutions to lose weight and stay fit are signing up for the “Biggest Loser Competition” being staged by Larry Bird at the Fit Zone for Women in Canton. The weight loss competition, much like the highly popular television show on NBC, will base results on percentage of body weight lost (weight lost divided by starting weight).
“This is a great opportunity for women to get healthy by losing weight and getting fit while having fun with other ladies in the Biggest Loser Competition,” says Bird who owns the Fit Zone for Women along with wife Vickie Johns-Bird. “This can be a very important step for women who have made resolutions to lose weight and are beginning to feel discouraged.”
The competition registration weigh-in, done on a walk-in basis, will begin January 15 and will continue until February 15. Required bi-weekly weigh-ins to determine progress in the program will be done through May 15, 2007.
Participants can benefit from signing up for special nutrition guidance offered as part of the Biggest Loser Competition as well as enrolling as a member of the women’s only Fit Zone (www.fitzoneforwomen.com) center at 7225 N. Canton Center Road at Warren in Canton. A minimum six month membership is required.
Grand Prizes will include a one-year Fit Zone for Women – Canton membership, a massage, and a gift card at Gabriala’s shop in downtown Plymouth which Bird also owns. Mini prizes will be awarded every two weeks after weigh-ins are complete and progress calculated. An informational meeting about the contest will be held Tuesday, January 9 at 8pm at the Fit Zone Canton.
Bird, who used to coach women’s softball teams and high school wrestling, went through some health issues that prompted him to enter therapy, rehabilitation, weight loss and fitness programs. That personal experience, and knowledge gained led him to open the Fit Zone for Women in March 2006.
The Fit Zone includes nautilus strength training equipment especially designed for women as well as cardio-vascular equipment. More than 20 group classes offered day and evening hours are included in the membership fees as well as time with a personal trainer.
“Scheduled time with a personal trainer at no extra cost is something that really sets Fit Zone apart,” says Bird. “New members meet with a personal trainer for their first three sessions and then once a month for a follow-up. After the initial three sessions, a member can schedule an appointment with a personal trainer at any time. Time with a personal trainer has a value of $50 to $75 an hour but is available at Fit Zone at no additional cost. This is big!”
The staff, who know members by name, keep an eye on workouts to make sure members aren’t doing anything improperly that could harm them.
“Our members, who get results they did not get at other gyms,” says Bird, ‘work out for about one hour three to four times a week at Fit Zone. It is amazing to watch the progress that the ladies are making in the first 30 days. It’s a great feeling to see happy faces when they have success in their health goals.”
