The Kieser Training concept provides scientifically based preventative and curative strength training programmes. It can eliminate back pain (even long term chronic cases), prevent osteoporosis, improve posture and help weight loss. Opposite Mornington Crescent Tube station in London. A subscription currently costs £399, with a free introductory session and £50 discount available in January. No lycra, no TVs, no thumping music, no sauna, no bar. Just row upon row of grey, efficient looking machines which seem to embody the Swiss origins of the centre. So why is Kieser Training opposite the Mornington Crescent Tube station in Camden so important to the people who use it?
Centre Manager Marcel Haasters says: “Kieser Training is not about hours of aerobic workouts to thumping music. We concentrate on one thing only – strength training, especially for backs, necks and knees. And we really concentrate. Our workouts are precise and effective, with no distractions or frills. As a result they only last half an hour and people can really feel the benefits with only one or two sessions a week.”
The Kieser Training concept provides scientifically based preventative and curative strength training programmes. It can eliminate back pain (even in long term chronic cases), prevent osteoporosis, improve posture and help weight loss.
When you first enter the centre, you are met with regimented banks of exercise machines, some hooked up to computer monitors, and a specialist doctor who oversees your initial assessment and the development of the best programme for your specific needs. Individual muscles are isolated and targeted for training and you are shown how to use the right training equipment to get the greatest benefit from their sessions.
As Kieser Training is so different from the run of the treadmill leisure centre, so the clientele is different as well. “Our users are different to many gyms.” says Marcel, “They are generally aged 30 to 60, who prefer our atmosphere to being surrounded by the lycra-clad narcissi often found elsewhere. We also attract busy professional people who don’t have lots of time to devote to a fitness regime and who appreciate the speed and efficiency of a Kieser Training programme. Many people come to us initially with severe or chronic back pain, having been recommended to visit Kieser Training by their GP or physiotherapist.
We have people from all walks of life here, from professional athletes to men and women in their eighties and even the occasional Hollywood star.”
Back problems are estimated to affect 8 out of 10 adults at some time in their lives and cost the UK around £22 million a year. Research has shown that 80% of back pain is caused by weak and imbalanced lower-back muscles.
“The common modern lifestyle of sitting at a desk and using the phone all day, coupled with doing no exercise, or short burst of sports or activity, don’t result in a balanced body. By embarking on a course of strength training and ensuring you have a healthy back, you can improve your fitness levels considerably. After all, it’s your spinal column that supports all the other bits”, says Marcel.
While Kieser Training has over 100 centres in Switzerland and the rest of Europe, and is expanding into Australia, there is currently only the one centre in the UK, based in Greater London House, opposite Mornington Crescent Tube station. A 12 month subscription currently costs £399, with a free introductory session and special offers available in January, including £50 discount and a free back analysis.
