UFO Filmmaker Visits "The 'X' Zone"

If some UFO enthusiasts didn't know about the legend of Jasper before, they do now.

R. J. Thomas, whose mockrumentary, "The Top Secret UFO Project," is being debated in UFO theory circles, gave an hour-long interview with Rob McConnell on "The 'X" Zone," the internationally-syndicated radio program that deals with UFOs and other such mysteries.

"To be on 'The 'X' Zone,' well, in UFO circles, that's like making it to Broadway," Mr. Thomas said,
honored to be on the show to talk about his biting parody of UFO documentaries.

"The most unexpected question I got from Mr. Connell was when he asked me if the world was ready for alien contact," Mr. Thomas said. "I asked him, 'Do you mean peaceful aliens? 'Close Encounters'-type aliens?' He said 'Yes.' I said, 'Everyone would be really excited at first. CNN would flash it around the world. The spaceship would be on the cover of Time. Then, evenutally, there'd probably be an arguement and we'd go to war, just like MacArthur predicted."

"But I'm not a UFO expert," Mr. Thomas continued. "A lot of Mr. Connell's past guests include people with a 'Dr.' before their name. I don't have a 'Dr.' before my name. I'm just an independent filmmaker trying to promote, in any way possible, my satirical little DVD."

Based on Mr. Thomas' 2004 novella of the same name, "The Top Secret UFO Project" chronicles the UFO-related events experienced by Jasper, a tiny Colorado hamlet some seventy-five miles south of Denver. According to the film, the town dealt with one unusual event after another in the summer of 1956. Scientists rushed into Jasper to investigate, reporters rushed in looking for stories, and government officials rushed in to keep it a secret from the world.

Billed as "the movie the government doesn't want you to see," "The Top Secret UFO Project," is a parody of the cheesy UFO documentaries of the 70's like "Overlords of the UFO," and of TV programs such as "In Search Of."

Mr. Thomas plays a documentary filmmaker who, in 2003, discovered (by accident) some top secret government films pertaining to the 1956 Jasper Incident. This inspired him to make a documentary about Jasper's UFO story, and to discover the truth behind what really happened that mysterious summer in Colorado.

"It was an honor to be on 'The 'X' Zone,'" Mr. Thomas said. "I just hope I was interesting enough for them to ask me back."
