New Modular Home to Float Across Ocean for Construction on Chebeague Island

Sanford, Maine — Canbury Homes has announced the first modular home construction project on Chebeague Island will travel across the ocean on a journey that will be fascinating to see, and challenging to accomplish.

"Due to tidal concerns it will take two full days to transport the four sections to the Island by barge from Portland. On the third day the crane and crew will be brought over, and the four sections will be set on the foundation that day," explained Frank Corbett director of sales and marketing for Canbury Homes, a leading builder of modular homes in southern Maine. "The new owners will actually be able to walk through their home the day it is set on the foundation."

The first section of the house sets sail on Monday, Dec. 4 at 7:45 a.m. The second portion sails on Tuesday afternoon. The remaining two sections will be transported across the water on Wednesday, and then the crane will said over to the island on Wednesday, according to Corbett.

"The planning process is a bit more complex for this home since materials, crews and the home all need to be coordinated and delivered via the barge," said Aaron St. Pierre, general manager for Canbury Homes.

Over 1,000 modular homes are built in Maine each year, but this is the first on Chebeague Island. The use of modular home construction is a growing trend as more and more people become aware of the cost-saving advantages of this type of construction, according to Corbett.

The house will be a 32' x 36' custom cape with an 8' "bump out," farmer's porch, and sunroom. When the house is assembled on the foundation by the crane it will be about 85 percent complete by the end of the day that it is set on the foundation.

"Once the sections are set, there are several weeks of work to install a heating system, finish plumbing in the basement, connect the power, build stairs to the basement and, and finish the part of the home called the ‘marriage wall.' The marriage wall is where the two sections of the same floor come together," said Corbett.

Canbury Homes focuses on construction and design of custom built modular homes in York and Cumberland Counties.
