WATER BIRTHS SEEING A SHARP INCREASE

Health secretary, Patricia Hewitt, recently announced that more women will be encouraged to have a home birth if that is their preferred option. With celebrities like, Gwyneth Platrow and Angelina Jolie being recently linked to water births, and celebrities such as Pamela Anderson, Kate Winslet and Sadie Frost having all given birth in water, the public are fast following suit. Water births are more in demand than ever. Made in Water, www.madeinwater.co.uk, an online boutique supplying natural and organic products for mother and baby, have sold over 3500 of their own design of birthing pool, La Basssine, since their launch in 2005.

“Celebrities promoting such a spiritual and natural form of childbirth makes mothers to be more aware of their options. It’s great that celebrities are out there, discussing different types of childbirth, helping other pregnant women to be less dubious about the unknown. It makes women think; ‘If she can do it, so can I!’ which is liberating. My own personal experiences of water birth lead me to design La Bassine. I understood that women need a sanctuary during labour, a place where they feel safe and secure”.

Water is considered to be one of the most effective sources of natural pain relief. It provides a relaxing effect, whilst also giving mothers the support that is needed during labour. In true celebrity style Made in Waters designs are organic and this February they will also be launching the first ever eco friendly birthing pool. It has been designed with special PVC that is not harmful to the environment.
