Thanks to positive word-of-mouth, "Outwitting Dogs" (Lyons Press, 2004, softcover) has risen as high as number eight on Amazon’s list of top-selling dog training books—an accomplishment that ranks the book with such well-known titles as "How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend," by The Monks of New Skete, and "Good Owners, Great Dogs," by Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson.

"Outwitting Dogs" was written by trainer Terry Ryan (Sequim, Washington, www.legacycanine.com) and Rochester, NY-based writer Kirsten Mortensen. It describes rewards-based techniques to teach dogs obedience behaviors and to solve problems such as excessive barking and chewing.

Readers have recommended the book on a number of websites, blogs, and Internet forums, such as www.doggiewoggie.com, www.discussdogs.com, and http://soggydoggie.blogspot.com.

Ryan has been a professional dog trainer for over 30 years and has been active in a number of training-related organizations such as Delta Society. She is a member of the advisory board to the Institute of Ethology at the North American Wildlife Foundation at Wolf Park and helped create the Japanese Canine Good Citizen testing and passport program in Japan.

In December, Ryan will be answering dog training questions on the Yahoo group DogRead (http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/DogRead/).
