This Holiday Season, Celebrate 'Green' to Protect the Environment

The holidays are a time to celebrate with food, decorations, gifts and parties, but they don't have to also be a time for needless waste and environmental harm. That's why, just in time for Thanksgiving, Suite101.com's Green Living section has published a free, three-part guide to "Going Green for the Holidays.""Compared to the rest of the world, Americans already generate more than their share of greenhouse gases and waste, and we're seeing the results in the growing evidence of global warming, environmental degradation and shrinking biodiversity," says Green Living writer Shirley Siluk Gregory. "By making an effort to go green at this time of year, we can still enjoy everything the season has to offer, but in a more environmentally responsible way."
Among the tips included in the “Going Green” guide:
* If you eat meat and dairy, make your choices humane and sustainable ones.
* Build your gift idea list through online browsing. Instead of making multiple trips to the mall, search the Internet for green, organic and fair-trade gifts.
* Use live greenery as decor. Rosemary, thyme and sage are all evergreen, wonderfully fragrant and can be used to season recipes all year long.
