Village Square – Surprise last-minute entrant Cherry the pig captured first prize and the golden whisk at the village square annual bake-off. The village mayor announced her victory from center stage, lauding her extraordinary apple cake. "Her apple cake is so delicious, one slice just isn’t enough!" Cherry the pig was just one of scores of talented home cooks competing for the village’s most coveted prize.Inspired by her love of dessert, and motivated to enter (erroneously, as it turned out) by a renegade family of mice, Cherry’s cake appealed to the judges in all categories: "This is the best apple cake I’ve ever tasted." "I need another piece!" "It’s so light and fluffy."
Previously a stay-at-home pig, Cherry opened her "Bake Shop" on the heels of her wild card victory. "I owe it all to the mice," Cherry was heard to say on opening day, after selling out of practically everything. And indeed, her "very hard, very salty, very cheesy biscuits" have become something of a must-have in the mouse community.
"It all seems to have happened over night," said Cherry, in an interview, "but it’s wonderful that a misunderstanding can lead to such nice things." More information is available in The Story of Cherry the Pig, by Utako Yamada, published by Kane/Miller Book Publishers, Inc.
