MV Supervisor Supervisor credited with saving bus operator’s life to receive City recognition

Modesto, CA – The quick actions of a transportation supervisor for the Modesto Area Express (MAX) public bus system is being credited for saving his co-worker’s life and will be honored for his efforts.

Sergio Mitre, will be honored at a future Modesto City Council meeting and will receive the MV Cares Award, given by MV Transportation, Inc., the company hired by the City to manage and operate the bus service.

On Friday, October 27, bus driver Carol Shyken was performing a pre-trip inspection of her assigned bus when she collapsed inside the vehicle. Shyken was unconscious, was not breathing and had only a slight purse.

Realizing Shyken had become ill, Mitre immediately began administering CPR while assuring Shyken she would be OK. Paramedics later arrived on the scene and took over the rescue efforts.

“I watched the on-bus video and I am convinced that Sergio saved Carol’s life,” said Pam Orrin, MV’s General Manager. “When the paramedics arrived they informed Sergio that he had in fact likely saved her life.”

Mitre, who has worked for the MAX service for 11 ½ years, said “I only did what anyone else would have done under the circumstances. I would have done the same for anyone we work with.”

Mitre will be honored at an upcoming City Council meeting. The date has yet to be determined. MV Transportation has operated the MAX service for 4 ½ years.
