That what seems to entail the plot of the Being One series, a plot that is based on a few New Yorker teenagers of mainly West Indian backgrounds, where most of the characters become Christians. The Rastafarian aspect comes from one of the characters, whose name is Zaurah Hutton, a Rastafarian girl who have immigrated with her immediate family from Jamaica years ago. Her mother, Lily, have claimed to be a ‘Rasta baby’ since her teenage years and from there things went downhill. No one from her extended family speaks to her except for a couple of Aunts and Uncles who are born again Christians. The Rastafarian religion have always had conflict since its origination in Jamaica and it is bound to happen overseas. The other characters of the book are born in the United States such as Timberly, whom is Zaurah’s cousin, Stephanie and Latrice. The only male character of this book so far is Barry, who is also born in the Carribean, only from Trinidad.Together, these characters go to the same high school and face some experiences of being a 1st semester freshmen high school student in New York City. The format of the book is mainly in dialogue that depicts the essence of each character. However, this book does not go much in detail since it is the first book of the series. So at the end, the reader would always look for more. It is an interesting intro to the many facets of New York life, in this case, West Indians. It’s not all about being American anymore. ###
